Edward Sabine (1788-1883),British astronomer,geophysicist and explorer. Sabine,who was born in Ireland,was commissioned in the British Army in 1803. Sabine did important work on magnetism,relating changes in Earth's magnetism to the periodicity of the sunspot cycle. Sabine become a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1818,and its President from 1861 to 1871. He was knighted in 1869.
