Benjamin Martin (1704-1782),English instrument maker and optician. Originally a schoolmaster,Martin opened an instrument shop in 1756,in Fleet Street,London, from where he sold his brand of 'visual glasses'. These were an early form of spectacles, with design features including an inward tilt and a reduction in size due to rings of horn or tortoise-shell. Martin retired in 1776. This copy of an original portrait included a caption (not shown) that gave his self-styled title of 'Optician'. This copy of the artwork was published in the August 1785 edition of 'The Gentleman's Magazine',a monthly magazine founded in London in 1731 | |
