Colliding galaxies NGC 6240,composite image. The two galaxies are just about to merge into a single galaxy. The collision has caused massive amounts of heat and formed an ultraluminous infrared galaxy, that is a galaxy that is abnormally bright in the infrared. It is thought this could be caused by intense star formation or an active galactic nuclei. NGC 6240 lies 400 million light years from Earth in the constellation Ophiuchus. Image obtained by combining data from the infrared array camera on the Spitzer Space Telescope and visible light data from the Hubble Space Telescope | |
