Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904),French sculptor. Bartholdi studied architecture in Paris at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. He produced a number of works,including the Lion of Belfort (1880),a large lion sculpture carved into a cliff at Belfort,France,to commemorate a battle in the Franco-Prussian War in which he had served. His most famous work,however,was the Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World),dedicated in New York,USA,in 1886. Bartholdi was awarded the Legion of Honour that same year.
