Cosmologies of Copernicus and Tycho. Diagrams showing and comparing the Copernican System (top) and the Tychonic System (bottom). Both attempted to explain the motions of the stars, planets and Sun relative to the Earth. The Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) proposed that the Earth and the five known planets circled the Sun (heliocentric). The Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) proposed that the five known planets circled the Sun,while the Sun and Moon circled the Earth (geocentric). Both systems had an outer sphere of fixed stars. These diagrams were printed in 1744 in France | |
