Samuel Horsley (1733-1806),English churchman and scientist. Horsley was born in Newington (now part of London) and educated at Trinity Hall,Cambridge. He made an extensive study of the mathematics of Issac Newton and wrote several commentaries upon it. He published a vast collection of the complete works of Newton,called the Omnia,and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He worked as a private tutor and,through the influence of friends,entered the hierarchy of the Church and in 1788 was appointed Bishop of St.David's. He was active in his diocese and in Parliament and was rewarded with bishoprics at Rochester and St.Asaph's.
