Elizabeth I,(1533-1603),Queen Regnant of England. Elizabeth was the fifth and last monarch of the House of Tudor, being the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth acceded the throne following her brother Edward VI,Lady Jane Grey and her sister Mary I. Elizabeth ruled by listening to her advisers, notably William Cecil, and as a result was immensely popular. She resisted attempts to marry for diplomatic advantage, instead confronting continental monarchs such as King Philip II of Spain. Her reign was noted for the flourishing of English dramatists such as Shakespeare and Marlowe and the adventures of explorers such as Drake and Raleigh.
