Diogenes (412 BCE - 323 BCE),Greek philosopher. Diogenes was born at Sinope in modern-day Turkey. Educated as a banker,he was exiled for defacing currency and moved to Athens. He became the only ever pupil of Antisthenes and readily adopted the Cynic philosophy of attaining virtue. However,Diogenes took a practical as well as theoretical approach, living an abject life sleeping in a tub in the market. His life was a constant battle against corruption - he famously carried a lamp during daylight so he could search for an honest man.
