Lung alveolus, computer artwork. Alveoli are the site of gas exchange in the lungs of mammals, where oxygen is taken up and carbon dioxide released. They sit at the ends of the bronchioles and consist of numerous microscopic alveolar sacs (bulbous) supplied by a large network of blood vessels. Carbon dioxide from de-oxygenated red blood cells passes from the capillaries, across the alveolar epithelium, into the alveoli, and is exhaled from the lungs. Inhaled oxygen dissolves on the mucosal lining of the epithelium and passes into the capillaries where it is taken up by the red blood cells and carried around the body | |
