Cliff with folded rock strata. These rock strata were formed as sediments were laid down at the bottom of ancient oceans. This folding is a chevron (zig-zag) folding that took place during the Variscan orogeny at the close of the Carboniferous era (300 million years ago). The Variscan orogeny,a period of uplifting and twisting of rocks from ancient seabeds, took place around 380 to 280 million years ago. These rocks are also part of what is called the Crackington formation. Photographed at Millook Haven,North Cornwall,UK | |
