Early 20th Century open-air school. School boy reading outside the classroom of an open-air school whilst wearing a coat with a 'sitting-out bag' attached to cover his feet. The open air school movement was created in 1904 in an effort to prevent the development of tuberculosis in children. It used a combination of medical supervision and teaching adapted to students with pre-tuberculosis. Classes were either held entirely outdoors or in rooms with large open windows.
