Engraving depicting Morienus the Greek (left) and King Khalid ibn Yazid (right). Morienus was a recluse, reputed to be a great alchemist. Khalid ibn Yazid sought him out and, through a series of conversations, was eventually told the secret of the Philosophers' Stone. Morienus is telling the King that whoever has required anything other than the Philosopher's Stone for their work is like a man climbing a stair with no steps,he falls on his head. This engraving comes from 'Symbola aureae' by Michael Maier, published at Frankfurt in 1617 | |
