Solar atmospheric phenomena. Solar halos and sun dogs (parhelia) observed in 1753 near Kirby Lonsdale,Westmorland (now Cumbria),England. The Sun is at centre, low over the horizon, with an arc above it. Either side are the bright spots and bars of light known as sun dogs (parhelia). These, and related solar atmospheric phenomena, are caused by ice crystals in the sky. This explanation was first proposed by Edme Mariotte in 1681,but his theory was not accepted until it was revived by Thomas Young in 1807.
