Solar atmospheric phenomena. This labelled diagram shows the 'Remarkable Halos and Parhelia' observed on the 29 March 1848 in southern England,Guernsey,Jersey and the Isle of Wight. The observations were made in daylight between 11am and 5pm. The arrow at lower left orientates the digram. Parhelia (sun dogs) are bright spots and halos around the Sun,caused by ice crystals in the sky. Artworks of this phenomenon were published in The Illustrated London News, and in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS). Such phenomena had been observed before, but it was unusual for them to be seen over such a large area | |
