St Paul's Cathedral observatory. This observatory (top, detail at bottom) was erected in 1821 on top of St Paul's Cathedral (dome at centre). It was designed to allow the English artist and land surveyor Thomas Horner (1785-1844) to draw a panoramic view of London. A 100-foot tall scale (upper left) shows the above-dome structures. From top to bottom, the labels (A-G) mark: the observatory (A); the cathedral's cross (B); the cathedral's ball (C); the ball chamber (lantern) (D); a circular scaffolding (E); the Golden Gallery (F); and the observatory on an enlarged scale (G). This artwork is similar to one by Samuel Rawle (1771-1860) | |
