Donati's Comet of 1858. Set of telescope drawings of the nucleus and coma of Donati's Comet,one of the brightest and most spectacular of the 19th century. Discovered in June 1858 by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Donati (1826-1873),this comet reached its closest point to the Earth on 10 October. The six smaller drawings were made at the Cambridge Observatory,England,from 21 September to 5 October. The centre drawing was made on 1 October at the observatory of Thomas Slater (1817-1889) on Euston Road,London,England,which housed one of the largest refractor telescopes of the time.
