Saturn's moon Hyperion. False-colour Cassini spacecraft image of the surface of Hyperion. The deep crater at centre is named Meri. The colour differences on the surface are thought to be due to variations in surface texture and composition. This irregular shaped moon is composed of water ice with a few impurities. It is thought that due to its low density much of its interior is empty. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft was launched in 1997 to investigate Saturn, its rings and its moons. Image obtained on 26th September 2005,at a distance of 17,900 kilometres from Hyperion | |
