Mollusc radula. Polarised light micrograph of the 'teeth' on the radula ('tongue') of the tropical mollusc Lathina rotundata. The radula is a toothed chitinous organ in the mouth of gastropods. The teeth seen here are used like a file to shred plant material for digestion. The teeth do get worn down, but new teeth produced at the back of the radula replace them. These 'teeth' are particularly large, and are thought to have evolved for use on tropical plants with rough surfaces | |
