Whole-sky image, far infrared. This is the night sky as seen in the region of the electromagnetic spectrum between wavelengths of 700 nanometres and 1 millimetre (the far infrared). The band across centre is the Milky Way. Infrared radiation cannot be seen by human eyes and is felt by humans as heat. Several missions and space telescopes have been used to survey the universe in infrared. The first was NASA's IRAS (Infrared Astronomical Satellite,1983),followed by the European Space Agency's Infrared Space Observatory (ISO,1995). ESA's Herschel Space Observatory (HSO,2009) followed these two earlier missions | |
