Jeronimos Monastery,Lisbon,Portugal, historical artwork. At left are sailing ships on the River Tagus, with horses and artillery guns (bottom left) on land. This monastery commemorates the voyages of exploration made in the 15th and 16th centuries during the Age of Discovery by Portuguese sailors and navigators. It was built by King Manuel I in 1502 on the site of a hermitage founded in around 1450 by Prince Henry the Navigator. This hermitage was where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in prayer before leaving for India in 1497. This artwork is from the National Library of Portugal | |
