Henry the Navigator (1394-1460),Portuguese prince. Henry,the son of John I,King of Portugal,sponsored exploratory expeditions along the west coast of Africa from the 1420s to the 1450s. This paved the way for Vasco da Gama's voyage of 1497-9 that found the sea route to India around Africa. The historical map in the background shows some of the regions visited by Portuguese explorers during the Age of Discovery.
