Ensisheim meteorite fall. Woodcut showing the fall of a meteorite in 1492 near the villages of Ensisheim and Battenheim (both labelled),then in Germany, now in the Alsace region of north-eastern France. This is the oldest meteorite whose fall can be dated precisely,to noon on 7 November 1492. The arrival of the meteorite as a meteor (upper left) was preceded by a loud explosion followed by an impact that formed a 1-metre deep crater in a wheat field (lower right). The remains of the meteorite were later put on display in the main hall of Ensisheim's 16th-century Regency Palace. The castle (left) was built in the 13th century | |
