John Glenn (left) and Gunter Went (right) with the command module for the Friendship 7 spacecraft that carried the Mercury 6 mission. Glenn (born 1921) was the pilot of the Mercury 6 mission that launched on 20 February 1962 and was the first American mission to put a human in Earth orbit. He went on to become the United States Senator from Ohio,a position he held from 1974 to 1999. Went (1923-2010) was the German-American aeronautical engineer who was in charge of the spacecraft close-out crews at the launch pads for the entire Mercury and Gemini programs (1961 1966),and the manned phase of the Apollo program (1968 1975) at the Kennedy Space Center.
