Genetically modified carnivorous plants. At left is a leaf from a genetically modified plant from the Drosera genus of carnivorous plants. At right is an ordinary leaf. The blue color is caused by the presence of the protein beta-glucuronidase (GUS),which is used as a reporter gene to monitor gene expression. The colour is proof of the ability of the plant to produce recombinant proteins. This research, being carried out for PATsas,a French biotechnology company, involves producing human recombinant proteins with medical applications, based on the natural proteins produced by carnivorous plants | |
