Peuerbach planetary models. These celestial spheres, with Latin titles, are based on the planetary models proposed by Georg von Peuerbach (1423-1461),an Austrian astronomer whose 1472 work on planetary theories was an attempt to reconcile the theories of Aristotle and Ptolemy. The models shown here are for the Sun (upper left),Venus (lower left),Saturn,Jupiter and Mars (combined at upper right) and Earth (lower right). This artwork is from the later work Commentaries on George Peurbach's New Theories of the Planets (1556) by the Austrian astronomer and scholar Erasmus Oswald Schreckenfuchs (1511-1579) | |
