Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930),Norwegian explorer, biologist and humanitarian. Here,Nansen is in Franz Josef Land in 1896,following his retreat from Furthest North. This record-breaking advance had been achieved as part of Nansen's 1893-6 expedition, where his ship Fram, drifting trapped in the Arctic ice pack, was used as the starting point for an attempt to reach the North Pole on foot. Nansen and his travelling companion Hjalmar Johansen reached 86 degrees 13.6 minutes, further north than anyone had ever been. Nansen was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for his refugee relief work. Artwork published in around 1900 | |
