Dutch capture of New York. 17th century artwork of a Dutch fleet under Admiral Cornelis Evertsen the Youngest (1642-1706) recapturing New York from the English on 24 August 1673. The town had been founded as New Amsterdam in 1625 by Dutch settlers, but was captured by the English in 1664. This brief recapture by the Dutch, part of the Third Anglo-Dutch War,ended when the Treaty of Westminster (November 1674) ceded the settlement permanently to England. This engraving, which has Dutch text at top,is a copy of an earlier 1674 Dutch work. This copy is from Justin Winsor's 1884 edition of Narrative and Critical History of America | |
