Red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) at a feeding station. The animal must lift the lid to get at food. The lid prevents birds stealing squirrel food. An intensive conservation management plan is being conducted in the north east of Scotland. This includes trapping north American grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis),which were introduced to the UK in the 1950's,and managing woodland to favour the smaller red squirrel. Scotland has 75 percent of the UK's remaining red squirrel population | |
