Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) blonde male. The male is much larger than the female, reaching a length of up to 2 metres and a weight of 120 kilograms. This is one of the less common blonde-coated animals. A blonde or white seal lacks pigment in the outer guard hairs of its fur coat. It is not a true albino though,as the eyes and skin are still pigmented. The rate at which blonde seals occur in this seal's main breeding population (South Georgia) is thought to be less than 1 in 900. Photographed on South Georgia | |
