Title page of Signorum Coelestium (1553). This book was written by the French astronomer and linguist Guillaume Postel (1510-1581). It included four woodcut celestial maps,showing the positions of the stars. The title translates as 'Heavenly Signs'. The text is in Latin,and includes the title and description (top) followed by the author's name and profession above the artwork. The artwork is a heraldic device of three crowns and the Latin motto 'Hic Labor' (this work). Publication details are at bottom,including the name of the publisher (Hieronymum Gourmontium),the College of Cambrai (Cameracensis),and where the book was published (Paris) | |
