It works by attacking the cell walls of bacteria,though some bacteria can develop resistance to this antibiotic,requiring it to be taken with clavulanic acid. It is used to treat a range of infections,and is often prescribed for use in children. It was introduced in 1972 by the British pharmaceutical company Beecham.
