Desert mirage. Artwork published in 1854 of a mirage in a desert, giving the impression of a pool of water where none exists. A mirage is an optical atmospheric phenomenon caused by the Sun heating layers of air and affecting their refractive indexes. A mirage can reflect real objects some distance away below the horizon,or simply display as a shimmering effect that appears to be a body of water. This mirage is described in the accompanying text as a Fata Morgana mirage, but that term is properly used for more complex mirages | |
