Newcomen steam engine,museum display. This is the boiler part of the engine,producing the steam used to drive a large pivot (not seen). This steam engine was invented in 1712 by the English ironmonger and preacher Thomas Newcomen (1664-1729). It is considered to be the first practical steam engine,and was used mainly to pump water out of mines. As of 2010,this is the world's only working Newcomen engine.
