MODEL RELEASED. Jaw bone surgery. Close-up of a new screw that has been inserted in a patient's lower jaw bone (mandible) during surgery. The mandible had been operated on previously during surgery for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). However, the patient sustained a fracture of the mandible while eating. The surgeons found infection at the fracture site, which was washed out and debris removed. New screws were inserted and the jaw fixed for six weeks (using the wires seen here) to allow healing. OSA is a condition where airway obstruction and soft tissue collapse causes breathing to be interrupted while sleeping | |
