Cicada (Tibicen plebejus) resting on a tree trunk. Cicadas have two pairs of large, membranous wings. They usually inhabit trees, the females laying their eggs in the wood. The nymphs fall to the ground after hatching and bury underground to feed on juices from plant roots. They emerge as adults after a period of several years. Photographed in the south of France | |
