Planck observatory full-sky image. This is the first full-sky image of our Universe from ESA's Planck space observatory, which surveys the sky in the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The aim of the mission is to study the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB),the radiation left over from the Big Bang. The CMB is red and yellow in this image. In the foreground it is masked by emissions (blue and purple) from the interstellar medium, the diffuse mixture of gas and dust,of our own galaxy the Milky Way. The Planck observatory launched on 14th May 2009. The first all-sky survey began in August 2009 and was completed in June 2010 | |
