Mary Engle Pennington (1872-1951),US bacteriologist and food preservation pioneer. Pennington studied chemistry at school,and despite opposition she studied at the University of Pennsylvania and obtained her PhD in 1895. From 1904 she worked in bacteriological chemistry and improved standards in food hygiene. From 1907,she was Chief of the Food Research Laboratory. She is a member of the USA's Women's Hall of Fame.
