Disfigured soldier wearing a prosthetic mask to cover his scarred chin. This man was fitted with a mask by the sculpture Anna Coleman Ladd. Ladd set up the American Red Cross 'Studio for Portrait-Masks' in Paris in 1917 to create cosmetic masks for soldiers disfigured in World War I. The masks were made of very thin metal painted to match the patient's skin colour. To see the man without the mask see image C006/9555 | |
