Kangaroo,18th century artwork. This kangaroo was seen at Endeavour River on 23 June 1770,during the first of the voyages made by the British explorer Captain James Cook (1728-1779). Rough drawings were made by the artist Sydney Parkinson, who was working under the direction of Joseph Banks, the naturalist who travelled on this voyage of 1768-71. However, this artwork,by John Hawkesworth for his 1773 account of the voyage,is a copy of a painting by George Stubbs (1724-1806). Stubbs had been commissioned by Banks to paint a portrait using samples of kangaroos brought back from the voyage. Errors include misrepresenting the hind feet and making the ears too large | |
