Richard Phillips (1778-1851),English chemist. Phillips was born in London,the son of a printer and bookseller. He was educated first as a chemist and druggist,but after publishing a paper on the analysis of water from the spa at Bath he was drawn to mineralogical chemistry. However,he maintained an interest in pharmaceutical studies,becoming a lecturer in chemistry at the London Hospital in 1817. He wrote more than 70 papers on chemical subjects and was the principal editor of the London Pharmacopoeia for many years.
