Puy de Dome observatory and antenna. Puy de Dome is the highest and youngest of several volcanoes in the eroded Chaine Des Puys volcanic hills of the Auvergne region of France. It last erupted circa 5760 BC. As the highest point,a meteorological observatory was constructed here, allowing views out over the surrounding countryside. Puy de Dome itself is a lava dome, with the summit (seen here) at an elevation of 1464 metres above sea level. The first research laboratory on this summit was built in 1875,with the television and radio antenna built in 1956. In Roman times,a temple was built near here, the ruins being discovered in 1873 | |
