Salt works. Conveyor belt and mounds of unrefined salt (upper left) at a salt works located at Salins-de-Giraud,in the Camargue region of France. The Camargue is a delta at the mouth of the River Rhone where it meets the Mediterranean Sea. It is a vast plain comprising large brine lagoons (etangs) cut off from the sea by sandbars and encircled by reed-covered marshes. The brine lagoons,as here, are mined for their salt deposits. Salt mining in the Camargue produces hundreds of thousands of tonnes of salt each year | |
