Cone Nebula NGC 2264 and Christmas Tree Cluster, optical image. This area of the night sky is known as NGC 2264. It contains the Cone Nebula (lower left) and the sparkling blue baubles of the Christmas Tree cluster. The reason for its shape is unknown, although the region seems to consist of clouds of dust and gas which obscure the light from the emission nebula and open cluster of stars behind. The Cone nebula is 7 light years in length, and lies 2700 light years from Earth in the constellation Monoceros. Image obtained by the WFI (Wide Field Imager) camera at La Silla Observatory,Chile | |
