Charles Green (1785-1870),British balloonist. Green first ascended in a balloon on 19 July 1821. Between 1821 and 1852,he made 526 ascents. His most famous exploit was his overnight flight on 7-8 November 1836. Piloting the balloon Royal Vauxhall,Green and two passengers covered a distance of 722 kilometres in 18 hours,traveling from Vauxhall Gardens,in London,England,to Weilburg,in the Duchy of Nassau (now Germany). This set a record which stood until 1907. In 1838 he took the balloon Great Nassau to an altitude of 8,274 metres. Green retired from flying in 1852 |
