Hoodoo (centre right). This rock formation, also called an earth pillar,is a pillar of soft, sedimentary rock topped by a flat cap of harder rock. These structures are formed in semi-arid regions of sedimentary rock that experience occasional heavy downpours. The rain weathers away unprotected material leaving behind the column of rock under the hard rock cap. Photographed near Drumheller,in the Alberta Badlands,Canada | |
