Elizabeth Kenny (1880–1952),Australian nurse and pioneering polio therapist. Kenny developed her method for treating polio patients in the 1930s,aimed at reducing the paralytic effects of the disease. The method used hot compresses on affected limbs,as opposed to immobilisation with plaster casts and splints. She travelled to the USA in the 1940s to present her methods to American doctors, and several Kenny treatment centres were opened. In this photograph, which dates from 1950,Kenny is waving to people from the ocean liner Queen Mary, which travelled between the USA and Europe | |
