Inuit weapon carvings. Artwork of etchings on Inuit weapons, found in 1826 by William Beechy at Hotham Inlet,in north-eastern Alaska, above the Arctic Circle. Some of the weapons have holes at one or both ends. The etchings were made on bone or walrus ivory, using a sharp stone. The engravings show scenes of Inuit life including dogs,a herd of reindeer, hunters with bows and arrows and harpoons, and hunters in small baidars (boats). The depiction of crocodiles is thought to have been due to European influence. Artwork from The Origin of Civilisation and the Primitive Condition of Man (Sir John Lubbock,1870) | |
