Roman mosaic of Venus. Mosaics consist of pieces of coloured glass or stone, used to form an image or pattern on a floor or wall. Instead of small pieces (tesserae),an inlay of larger pieces has been used,a technique known as opus sectile. Here, different colours of marble have been inlaid on slate (black). This mosaic shows the goddess Venus (Aphrodite) tying or adjusting her sandal whilst leaning on a pillar. This mosaic is displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Naples,Italy | |
