Arthur Henfrey (1819-1859),English botanist. Henfrey was born to English parents at Aberdeen, and studied medicine at St.BartholomewÕs Hospital in London. Chronic asthma meant he couldnÕt practice medicine,so he turned to the study of botany. His original work was in the anatomy of ferns and of the monocotyledons. Henfrey was also a fervent advocate of Linnean thought in terms of the orders of plants and made several important translations of the work of German botanists. His text books were numerous and were used for many years. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1852 | |
