George Cruikshank (1792-1878),English caricaturist. Cruikshank was born in london and served his apprenticeship with his father,a prominent caricaturist of the late 1790s. His early work specialised in social commentary and political satire, especially aimed at Royalty. Politically neutral,Cruikshank had a dislike of the enemies of England and shared the racism of British society, evident in several works. However,he was popular as someone always ready to prick the pompous or overblown figures in the public view. He was a one-time friend of Dickens and illustrated some of his books (notably Oliver Twist). He was a campaigner for temperance, and left over 10,000 works | |
